In each of the past 8 semesters Sigma Nu has been on campus, the brothers have posted GPA averages ranking them either #1 or #2 out of 15 IFC fraternities. The Fall 2010 semester saw that trend continue, as Sigma Nu posted a GPA of 2.95, ranking them once again #1. This is comparable to the NIU All Men's GPA Average of 2.75 and the University-wide GPA Average of 2.88. Continuing to excell academically is an important core value for Sigma Nu.
Sigma Nu Wins Regents Award
Sigma Nu attained the number one GPA for NIU in the Fall 2006 semester. Our colony posted a 2.78 GPA ranking Sigma Nu first out of thirteen IFC organizations. This accomplishment meets one of the core objectives established for our new fraternity - to achieve the Regents Award for Academic Excellence. The Chapter once again won the Regent's Award for 2009-2010 after once again posting a 2.95 average.
Importance Of Academics
Sigma Nu has a strong academic focus during the recruiting process. Prospective members learn quickly that Sigma Nu intends to hold the top academic spot at NIU. Every member's academic performance counts. When prospects are genuinely serious about joining Sigma Nu, they will focus on getting their grades up so they can join. If they are apathetic, however, the 2.5 GPA standard serves the fraternity well to weed out the undisciplined. In both scenarios, the fraternity wins by holding to the standard.
To better ensure that Sigma Nu will continue to excel academically, prospective members are required to do scholarship hours for each week. This time is specifically designed for students to work on their courses, without interruption. Other fraternity members will also assist during scholarship hours by tutoring with study materials that are kept on file within the fraternity.
Scholarships for Students
Chapter Scholarship Accounts are established by alumni for the benefit of a specific chapter. These Funds further the charitable, educational and other tax-exempt purposes of the Foundation by implementing scholarship programs for the benefit of initiates and candidates of the chapter.
Scholarships are awarded based upon outstanding academics, merit, achievement, and leadership surrounding the university and the fraternity.
This year (2010-2011), Sigma Nu will award $5,000 to its current members and a $1,500 award to an incoming Freshman
The Foundation staff will work with the donor to create the criteria for each scholarship.
By continually emphasizing academics and following a strict regiment for students to adhere to, Sigma Nu will continue to surpass the others and set the standard for the Greek System.
